2016 LTC/Non-LTC Convictions: ROBBERY

Introduction

The purpose of this article is to compare the crime statistics between Texas Licensed To Carry (LTC) and non-LTC holders for robbery for the year 2016. Robbery is defined as the theft of property or money through force or threat of force. Investigating the relationship between these two populations and the crime rate is important in understanding the effects of gun control measures and the potential risk posed by individuals who have obtained an LTC.

Crime Statistics among Texas LTC Holders

According to the data, there were a total of 1,265 convictions for robbery in Texas in 2016. Out of these convictions, only 1 conviction was of an LTC holder, making up 0.08% of all convictions. In contrast, non-LTC holders comprised 99.92% of the robbery convictions.

Factors That May Contribute to the Difference in Crime Statistics between Texas LTC and Non-LTC Holders

The discrepancy in crime statistics between these two populations may be attributable to a few factors. To obtain an LTC in Texas, individuals must pass rigorous background checks and meet certain eligibility requirements. In addition, Texas LTC holders are required to take classes and receive instruction designed to educate them about responsible gun ownership and the consequences of breaking the law. Additionally, LTC holders may be more aware of the risk and responsibility associated with owning a gun and thus be less likely to commit a crime.

Conclusion

This article has explored the differences in crime statistics between Texas LTC and non-LTC holders for the crime of robbery in 2016. The number of convictions of LTC holders was considerably smaller than that of non-LTC holders due to the stringent background checks and eligibility requirements for obtaining an LTC, as well as the classes and training that are required in order to become an LTC holder. The findings of this article have implications for those in the group with the higher percentage: non-LTC holders, who are more likely to commit a crime involving a firearm.
