2021 LTC/Non-LTC Convictions: UNL CARRY HANDGUN LIC HOLDER

Introduction

The purpose of this article is to compare crime statistics between Texas licensed to carry (LTC) holders and non-LTC holders for the 2021 UNL Carry Handgun License Holder (UNL CHLH) period. This article will define what UNL CHLH stands for, explain the importance of studying the relationship between LTC holders and crime statistics, and explain why LTC holders are more likely to be law-abiding citizens.

Crime Statistics Among Texas LTC Holders

For UNL CHLH in 2021, the crime statistics among Texas LTC holders were 7 convictions while 86 convictions were among non-LTC holders. This shows that LTC holders were less likely to commit a crime than non-LTC holders, with only 7.9% of UNL CHLH convictions belonging to LTC holders, compared to 92.1% belonging to non-LTC holders.

Factors that May Contribute to the Difference in Crime Statistics between Texas LTC and Non-LTC Holders

Several factors may contribute to the difference in crime statistics between Texas LTC and non-LTC holders. First, background checks and eligibility requirements for obtaining an LTC are generally more stringent and comprehensive than for obtaining a non-LTC. This means that people who obtain an LTC may have already been screened for potential criminal activity. Second, LTC holders also must complete training and education courses on handgun safety and the laws regarding the use of firearms, whereas non-LTC holders are not required to complete such courses. Finally, LTC holders may perceive more risk and responsibility when carrying a firearm, leading to a greater likelihood of obeying the law.

Conclusion

This article studied the crime statistics between Texas LTC and non-LTC holders for UNL CHLH in 2021. Results showed that LTC holders were significantly less likely to commit a crime than non-LTC holders, with only 7.9% of UNL CHLH convictions belonging to LTC holders, compared to 92.1% belonging to non-LTC holders. Factors such as more comprehensive background checks and ballistic education may have contributed to this difference, as well as a perception of increased risk and responsibility associated with carrying a firearm. These findings suggest that LTC holders are more likely to be law-abiding citizens, and they should be respected and valued for their commitment to upholding the law.
