Buying a Gun Online

It may seem like a tricky process, but it isn't.  There are some steps involved, but it's not much different than buying a gun from a gun store.  First of all, to buy a gun online, you must be at least 18 years old for long guns (rifles and shotguns) and 21 years old for handguns. Background checks are required for all online gun purchases.  And of course, it must be legal for you to purchase the gun in your location.

The Online Purchase Process

  1. Find a Seller : Look for reputable online sellers who are licensed Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs).
    • Sites that sell guns are licensed FFLs, and will have their license information published somewhere on the site.
  2. Choose Your Firearm : Browse the seller's selection of firearms and choose the one you want to purchase.
    • Unlike brick-and-mortar gun stores, you'll need to make your decision without handling the gun.
  3. Verify the Seller's Credentials : Make sure the seller is a licensed FFL and has a good reputation among firearms enthusiasts.
    • This is mostly to ensure you aren't going to get caught up in a scam.
  4. Complete the Transaction : Pay for your firearm using a credit card, debit card, or other accepted payment methods.
  5. Have the Firearm Shipped to an FFL Dealer : The seller will ship the firearm to a local FFL dealer.
    • Before sending the firearm, call the FFL dealer to confirm they are willing to accept the shipment and conduct the background check required by federal law.
    • Most FFLs will have a fee associated with this service.
  6. Complete a Background Check : Contrary to internet rumor, buying a gun online still requires a background check.  The FFL processing your transfer will perform a NICS background check, just like any gun store.

Most online gun retailers will have a tool to allow you to select an FFL. Some may not, in which case we recommend visiting the FFL Finder over at Brass Kickers. It's important to call an FFL to learn if transfers is a service they offer, and their fee.

Key Factors to Consider When Dealing with Online Sellers

  • Verify the Seller's License : Ensure the seller is a licensed FFL.
  • Check Reviews and Ratings : Research the seller's reputation by reading reviews from other customers and checking their ratings on review websites.
  • Use Secure Payment Methods : Use credit cards, debit cards, or other accepted payment methods that offer protection against unauthorized transactions.

Tips for a Safe and Compliant Purchasing Experience

  • Familiarize Yourself with State-Specific Laws : Research the firearms laws in your state to ensure you're complying with all requirements.
  • Keep Records : Keep records of your purchase, including receipts and shipping information.
